Man Utd 4 - 0 Wigan Athletic

Man Utd finally win their first "major" trophy in 2 years. The trophy that was the most "minor" for them for the past 10++ years has become the only "major" trophy they will win for 2 years. But then, job well done still though.

Things i hate RIGHT now.
1) Cones or Cone-like objects, cant they be spherical something?
2) Cramer, why must he come up with a method that tries to replace what the inverse matrix can already do?
3) Maths, for obvious reasons.

Wednesday, February 15, 2006Probability
I just wanna clarify a probability question that i got wrong today. Didnt wanna keep repeating, so i decided to post here and direct you guys here instead. If you are reading this and after reading, dun understand just ask me.
Example 4d (Page 101 of notes)
i) P(Full time male) = 60/100 = 0.3
ii) P(Full time AND Female) = 140/200 * 120/200 = 0.42
THIS IS WRONG. I just realised that the probability of a full time student being selected AND the probability of a female being selected are NOT INDEPENDENT. The above answer is only correct if the two probability are INDEPENDENT [P(A ∩ B) = P(A) * P(B)].
RIGHT ANSWER: The two probabilities are dependent of each other because given that the student is Full time, we can no longer pick students that are part time.
FT stands for Full time, F stands for Female. ∩ stands for Intersect, U stands for Union.
So, P(FT ∩ F) = P(FT) * P(F / FT), in words it means as below,
P(picking a Full time student AND a female student) = P(picking a Full time student) * P(picking a female student GIVEN probability of picking a Full time student)
P(FT ∩ F) = P(FT) * P(F / FT)
= 140/200 * 80/140
= 80/200
= 0.4
Otherwise, we can just use Yide's and the lecturer's method of just taking 80/200 = 0.4 to get the answer straight away from the chart.
iii) P(FT U F) = P(FT) + P(F) - P(FT ∩ F)
P(Full time or Female) = 140/200 + 120/200 - 0.4
= 0.9
Otherwise Yide's and the lecturer's method is just to take (80 + 60 + 40)/200 = 0.9 to get the answer.
JJ, the reason we were wrong was becoz we treated the two probabilites as independent. But i realised that choosing a female when choosing a full time student are not independent of each other.
Sorry JJ, Stamfy, Lye Huat. And ya Yide u are Right. haha.
