Heard this story from a friend...
A women was diagnosed with cancer and the private doctor that she went to, recommended a package sort of treatment for her to cure her of the cancer cells. But to do that, she had to fork out a large sum of money to pay for the treatment. The women was married with 2 small kids and she originally planned to forgo treatment so as not to let her husband and her children suffer. But the husband told her that he would rather be bankrupt than to see her die. So, they sold off their flat for a low price of $120k because they need the money urgently. They used the money for the women's treatment but the money was only able to sustain her for 3 months. 120k for 3 months!!! But thats not the end of the story... Soon, the doctor discovered that the original diagnosis was wrong and that because of the treatment she was receiving, she had developed kidney failure.
So, was the doctor at fault? Should the doctor be made to pay for the treatment and the women's kidneys? And how much is a kidney worth? Who can determine that? In this society, people are always made to pay for their mistakes, so should the doctor pay for his mistake too? Or is the mistake considered to be "part of the job"? Is this the same as the situations where goalkeepers fumble the balls into their own net and say that mistakes do happen and are part of the job of being a goalkeeper? Are the people who took advantage of the ordeal of the family and paid a lowly price of $120k for the flat, right in doing that? Or are they considered to be helping the family out by buying the flat with cold hard cash and in a way helped the family? If 120k could only last 3 months, is there a point in buying insurance as some insurance policies might not even insure that amount of money, considering that the premium someone has to pay monthly could have been saved and used in the situation instead?
